NEW - Doom Arena screen shots
DoomArena is a waiting room for DOOM games on Solaris 2. People everywhere on the net can run doomarena and then start doom games with other people waiting to play. It is a great tool to help you waste more time playing doom. This is good, because playing doom is very therapeutic and will make the time you do spend working much more productive.
DoomArena makes it really easy to start networked DOOM games with other people. Here are some of the advantages DoomArena has over regular Sun DOOM:
The DoomArena release can be found in ftp://ftp.activesw.com/pub/doom. The file includes everything you need to run a DoomArena server using the Doom shareware wad. To run other wads, you will need to acquire the registered Doom1 and/or Doom2 wads. Complete install and setup instructions are included.
If you have problems getting multi-player games to work, you may need patch1. Here's the README for patch1.
DoomArena has been tested on Solaris 2.4, Solaris 2.5, using a variety of display adapters including the new Creator graphics on the UltraSparcs.
DoomArena 2.0 is NOT backward compatible with version 1.0. The safest way to avoid problems is to shutdown the old server and remove all client installs. A version 1.0 client will cause endless error popups for other players. Install the 2.0 server following the instructions above and re-install the clients as usual.
The version of sundgadoom included with DoomArena has been tuned for the sun4m architecture. Therefore, you will not get very good performance on sun4c machines (SS1, SS2, etc.).
Doug Stein and Steve Jankowski wrote DoomArena one day when they were bored.

There is a mailing list for general discussion of DoomArena. The list will be of most interest to server maintainers, but players might find it interesting as well.
