You are going to travel through
a wonderland. Astonishment and amazement will probably become
your habitual state of mind. You are not likely to become bored
with the endless spectacle offered for your eyes to feast on.

Prelude
This trip started when Laura and
I began our engagement. The whole business of marriage and maturity
started us questioning what we really wanted out of life. Laura
had travelled before, but at the time she was worried about money
and work and future, and me, well, I was on the path, high school,
college, teaching, work, and no breaks. Other of my friends had
taken time out, but I had not, and I regretted it. Laura and I
also saw all these Australians taking these huge trips; since
getting off of Australia can be very expensive, Aussie's tend
to travel a lot once they get away. And so discussions of the
World Trip began, as did saving the money. In true Laura style,
she began to buy books on travelling, and one book, The Practical
Nomad gave us a lot of good info, and the author worked at
a travel agency in San Francisco. He said that a person could
travel in the third world for about $15,000 a year, and so Laura
and I began saving, starting thinking about where we wanted to
go, and in time, the trip started taking shape.
And so began our great pilgrimage, and the funny thing was, as the dream became a reality, we both got scared at the magnitude of the venture. It's easy to talk of doing something, but to do it, to pack up everything, so start buying gear, getting vaccinated, reading about all the diseases and dangers, well, it's harder than we thought, but in some ways easier. We both feel called to do this trip, and we are open to what it has to offer, new perspectives, clues on our future, time to think about life and our place in the world.
