TANZANIA & KENYA Cheeseman Safari continued
Siana Springs & Nairobi, Aug 14-15
On Aug 14 we were nearly finished with the safari. We slept in and missed the early game drive but the next game drive featured three female lions played with their four cubs, and they all played. It was a treat to see the adult females be so playful with their young. Luckily the group didn't mind seeing lions once again and skipped trying to find a Black Rhino. Aaron saw a Usamisiro Barbett.

We then drove to Sienna springs, Aaron took a nap while I did 1 1/2 hour bird walk around grounds. Was very nice. Went on only night drive of the safari that night and can you believe that Doug slept through the whole thing! We all had a great time and saw a lot, it can be real hit or miss, so we got lucky. Saw: Spring Hare, Greater Bushbaby, Hyenas, Bat-eared Fox, Slender-tailed Nightjar (Aaron's favorite bird), Spotted Thick-knee, White Tailed Mongoose (bigger than the previous mongooses we had seen), Cape Hare, & Lesser Bushbaby.

On the 15 Aug we drove back to Nairobi. We had a hotel room just for a few hours, but this being a Cheeseman trip we couldn't just get ready for our flight. Nope, we went into downtown Nairobi, shopped til we dropped and then visited a great museum. We finally found a really nice drum in the local market and after 45 minutes of bargining, we bought it. Luckily Doug and Gail had room in their bags for most of our purchases (except the large drum) and we didn't have to lug all that stuff to Europe with us. We got ready at the hotel and crossed our fingers that we'd catch the plane as KLM had overbooked the flight to Nairobi for the next three days and were taking volunteers. We got there four hours early and made our flight with no problems. After three and a half months, we left Africa for Madrid, Spain. I couldn't believe it.

Cute female gazelle hanging around our tent. Sorry, I've forgotten the name

Here's the male, notice the curved antlers

Is that Ernest Hemingway in Africa with his laptop?

Take me home!
